June 2008

Dear Friends:

Summer Camp. What thoughts come to mind when you hear the words “summer camp”? You would be surprised by my memories of summer camp. Summer Bible Camp. What thoughts do you have now?

The discussion at a recent Member Network meeting focused on Summer Bible Camp and whether we (SOHM) should continue to promote and support sending our children to Camp Streamside, a residential Christian camp in Stroudsburg, PA. (By the way, I always ask these kinds of questions of our membership because our service is not to become ritualistic or a habit but should be an expression of thanksgiving as we live out the Great Commission.) The conversation was lively. Local pastors and community leaders were passionate about how we are to love and nurture our children by introducing them to Christian living - the 365-24 hours a day kind of living. They were passionate about the reconciling and unconditional love experienced between counselor and camper and camper to camper. They became ombudsmen for the parents and guardians of these children, who have become exhausted in rearing children in a society where there appears to be few, if any, boundaries in behavior or accountability.

Summer Bible Camp is vital to the health of the child, family, community and church. A personal relationship with the Triune God changes how we view the world, ourselves and other people. Star of Hope Ministries, Inc. sees the joy (and difference) in our children when they return home from Bible Camp and it is contagious, inspiring and challenging...as the local pastors commission them as “dear children [to] continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming” (1 John 2:28).

Now...what thoughts come to mind when you think of summer camp? Please consider the impact of your gift in ushering the kingdom of God on earth by supporting the Bible Camp program of Star of Hope. Our children need all of us because, “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6). Thank you!

In His grace,

Wanda M. Tugman
Executive Director
