Star of Hope Ministries, Inc.

April 2008

Dear Friends:

As spring has approached the Greater Paterson area, we are continuing our work in partnership with urban and suburban churches to address pain and poverty in the truth and power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The recent Christmas, Thanksgiving Box of Love and Back to School initiatives helped local churches and ministries to bring encouragement and blessing to inner city families.

You were probably aware of the new Executive Director, Courtney Brooke Smith, who came to minister with us late last fall. After several months of her enthusiastic leadership, the difficult decision was made last week that the position is not the best fit for Courtney’s gifts and talents. We are appreciative of her effort and energy on behalf of Star of Hope and pray for God’s continued leading in the future.

Wanda M. Tugman, Star of Hope’s former Director of Christian Community Development, has been promoted to the position of Executive Director. Wanda came to SOHM four years ago and has been overseeing the core of our ministry efforts for the past three years. Her qualifications are as follows:

  • Native Patersonian

  • Thirty-one years experience in human services administration (10 years in Municipal government serving as Director of Aging and Disabled Services, Municipal Welfare Director and Director of Ryan White Title I Services [HIV/ AIDS Grantor for Passaic and Bergen counties]; 21 years experience in not-for-profit organizational management serving as Volunteer Services Director and Director of Outreach Services)

  • B.A. Sociology, Kean University

  • Post Graduate courses, Social Work Administration, Rutgers University

  • Member of Madison Avenue Christian Reformed Church

We know you will join the Board of Trustees in praying for her transition into the full leadership of Star of Hope.

Star of Hope’s Vision Statement: Residents of the Greater Paterson area are part of a transformed community and possess the hope, skills and relationships necessary to help them become self-sufficient, resolve their own problems, and control the destiny of their communities honoring the Lord Jesus Christ.

We plan to open our new Empowerment Center later this year by expanding the ministry in providing evening or Saturday training in key life skills. The outcomes of the initiative are:

  • Residents of the Greater Paterson area successfully navigate and compete in the global market.

  • Churches and community organizations coordinate and maximize local resources for the employment of underemployed residents.

Your past support has been greatly appreciated. Your prayers and gifts now will “empower” us to continue to address pain and poverty together.

In His grace,

William R. Kohout, Chairman Board of Trustees
